The Complexity of Grief

People grieve when their loved ones die. The passing away of an individual is one type of grief; secondary losses are another. When I talk about secondary losses, I mean their roles in your life, the life you had or could have had with the person, the future you envisioned for them or the ones they discussed with you, and their impact on your life, among other things. This is one type of grief.

Another type of grief people tend to overlook is loss of job, position, status, relationship, and so on. Did you know it’s OK to grieve over these things? Are you struggling after the loss of someone dear to you or a relationship, status, or job? At Bayo Counselling Services, we help you plan how to grieve in a healthy way and move on even when you feel stuck.

The experience of pain following the loss of a loved one or something deeply cherished can be incredibly intense. Some individuals have described this pain as piercing, difficult, gripping, numb, brutal, awful, or complex. Others have found it difficult to put into words. It’s natural to wish that there was a way to avoid or minimize this pain, but some people are adept at delaying or concealing their suffering. However, it’s essential to recognize that this approach may only postpone the healing process. While it may sound firm, the truth is that facing and working through the pain is essential for the healing process.
